Professor Sheying Chen received his doctoral and master’s degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles, a postdoctoral certificate in Higher Education Management & Leadership from Harvard University, and a graduate degree and an undergraduate diploma from two major universities in China. He has served as Professor and Associate Provost at Pace University in New York and was previously Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Professor with tenure at Indiana University (Southeast), responsible for advancing strategic agenda in the key areas of faculty development, academic publications and grants support, alternative delivery and instructional technology, equity and diversity, student access and success, institutional planning, and local and international outreach. Prior to IU. Dr. Chen was Professor and Dean of Professional Studies at the University of Guam (a major U.S. land-grant institution), overseeing three schools (formerly Colleges of: Business & Public Administration; Education; Nursing, Health Sciences & Social Work) and several institutes and centers. He also held tenure as Professor and Chair at the City University of New York (College of Staten Island), where he headed a large unit housing sociology, anthropology, psychology, social work, disability studies, women's studies, aging, and a number of interdisciplinary initiatives. He worked at the University of California at Los Angeles, California State University, and the University of Hong Kong and was involved in major research projects as a Research Scientist or Associate collaborating with research teams at UC Berkeley etc. Prior to his relocation to the United States, he was a permanent faculty member of Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University, Guangzhou, in one of the first sociology departments re-established in China, until 1992. He received and administered numerous research and other grants and was the founder of IU Southeast Academy for Leadership and Diversity. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Springer Book Series on International Perspectives on Social Policy, Administration, and Practice, and editor/co-editor for major international book series and journals, including International Perspectives on Aging. He is frequently invited as a keynote speaker; his publication records include the world’s first comparative book on community care in China, works on mental health and social support for the aging, articles and books on general public policy (GPP) (especially social policy of a changing “economic stateâ€), projects on higher education management/academic administration, and volumes on research methods and measurement/analysis issues.
