Track 01: Geriatrics

Geriatrics is a branch of science that focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. It is distinguished from geriatrics, which is the branch of medicine that specializes in the treatment of existing disease in older adults.

Track 02: Geriatrics and Ageing Biology

The study of the biology of ageing or biogerontology, has as its primary objective understanding the basic processes that underlie ageing and age related disease. For some this means increasing human life span, for others it means increasing human health-span. Biological aging is the gradual deterioration of function characteristic of most complex life forms, arguably found in all biological kingdoms, that on the level of the organism increases mortality after maturation. The word senescence can refer either to cellular senescence or to senescence of the whole organism.

Track 03: Geriatrics and Geriatric Medicine

It is a specialty that focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. The main aim of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology is to provide the highest quality clinical care to improve the health of older adults and society by creating, translating, and disseminating knowledge through education and research.

Track 04: Geriatrics and Geriatric Diseases

Age related diseases are commonly seen in older patients. These diseases include Osteoarthritis, Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases. About 60% of the older populations suffer from Obesity which leads to type 2 Diabetes and some suffer from metabolic syndrome which increases risk factor for developing cardiovascular diseases. And also in older people sleep related diseases are most common which further results in Old age Psychiatry.

Track 05: Geriatrics and Geriatric Treatment

geriatric patient is an older person with impaired overall function. There is no set age, but he or she is usually more than 75 years old with chronic illness (es), physical impairment and/or cognitive impairment. Geriatric Treatment is the one which treat all the chronic illnesses of the elderly. This may help someone to live longer and to live comfortably, even if they cannot be cured.

Track 07: Geriatrics and Gerontology

Gerontology is the study of the social, psychological, cognitive and biological aspects of aging. Gerontology, as defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “the comprehensive study of aging and the problems of the aged.” Many people confuse Gerontology with Geriatrics. Whereas Geriatrics focuses strictly on the medical conditions and disease of the aging, Gerontology is a multidisciplinary study that incorporates biology, psychology and sociology.

Track 08: Geriatrics and Geriatric Management

Geriatric management is the process of planning and coordinating care of the elderly and others with physical and/or mental impairments to meet their long term care needs, improve their quality of life, and maintain their independence for as long as possible. It entails about the old age care and their families in managing, rendering and referring various types of health and social care services.

Track 09: Geriatrics and Elderly Care

Elder Care is showing special care to senior citizens regarding their daily needs. When their physical health begin to fail maintaining of the body becomes difficult. Seniors living in both home and senior living community, medical and non-medical home care should be provided. Longevity refers to duration of life or life expectancy. It is dependent on a person’s health condition and age. Exercise, diet and lifestyle are major factors that can affect longevity. Elderly care attends not just to the physical but also the psychosocial and spiritual concerns of patients and their families, and extends into the bereavement period. Elderly care is the term used to describe the support and medical care given during the time surrounding death.

Track 10: Geriatrics and Case Studies

Geriatric Case Study involves the case study of older people in the society and it is an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a subject (the case), as well as its related contextual conditions. Case studies appear with great frequency throughout popular works, with nearly anybody able to claim to have done one. Case studies also can be produced by following a formal research method. These case studies are likely to appear in formal research venues, such as journals and professional conferences, rather than popular works. Geriatric Psychiatry is one which gains most attention.

Track 11: Geriatrics and Critical Gerontology

Critical Gerontology can be used to describe a rather broad spectrum of theoretical interests, ranging from constructions and deconstructions of aging to the issue of power and control in contemporary society. What ties these different perspectives together is that all of them, in one form or another, have been critical of a theoretical self-understanding of Gerontology.

Track 12: Geriatrics and Biological Gerontology

Biological Gerontology is the field which seeks to develop a biological understanding of the processes of aging, and is the field in which we will apply these findings to increase the length and vitality of our lives. Biological Gerontology is the scientific investigation into how and why we age on the molecular level, the organismic level, evolutionary level, and all those in between. This discipline seeks to understand why underfed animals live longer (as they do with caloric restriction), how free radicals might take years off our lives, where telomeres come into play with aging cells and aging people, and why having offspring later in life increases lifespan over many generations. Understanding the biological basis of aging is the first step towards slowing the aging process down, and maybe someday reversing the process.

Track 13: Geriatrics and Geriatric Syndromes

Geriatricians have embraced the term “geriatric syndrome”, using it extensively to highlight the unique features of common health conditions in the elderly. Geriatric syndromes, such as delirium, falls, incontinence and frailty, are highly prevalent, multifactorial, and associated with substantial morbidity and poor outcomes. Nevertheless, this central geriatric concept has remained poorly defined.

Track 14: Geriatrics and Healthcare Services

Geriatric care service provides mobile mental health services and episodic treatment services to community-dwelling older adults 60 and older that emphasize individual needs, strengths, choices, and involvement in service planning and implementation. Services leading to a better quality of life for older adults disabled by mental illness. Reach homebound older adults, help the clients and their families understand mental illness, provide the needed services, information and referral that would improve the client’s life, help older adult clients obtain the highest level of independent functioning, and prevent the need for hospitalization or long term placement out of the home.

Track 15: Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology

Clinical Gerontology focuses on research which characterizes physiological changes across the human life span that influences the risk of age-related diseases/conditions.  Specific aspects of changes across the life span include. Rates of aging changes in different physiologic outcomes. The rates of progression of change with age in physiologic and pathologic factors affect many health outcomes directly.   Individuals showing slow rates of change in a given outcome may be at reduced risk or “protected” from developing an age-related condition.  In addition, the predictive value of rates of change at one period of the life span in regard to future rates of change in other outcomes and risk for age-related conditions is of interest.

Track 17: Geriatrics and Public Health

Public Health is a part of sciences, skills and convictions that is focused on the preservation. In descriptive epidemiology, scientists do use of available data to identify health related problems. In analytical epidemiology, scientists assess the risk factors with these problems. The main part of Epidemiology is to gain new understanding of the correlation of genetic and environmental factors affecting on human health, providing the scientific basis for translation of this knowledge to global health.

Why London, UK

In the United Kingdom, most geriatricians are hospital physicians, where as some focus on community geriatrics. While originally a distinct clinical specialty, it has been integrated as a specialisation of general medicine since the late 1970s. Most geriatricians are, therefore, accredited for both. In contrast to the United States, geriatric medicine is a major specialty in the United Kingdom; geriatricians are the single most numerous internal medicine specialists. The most rapid growth in the population of adults aged 65 years and older was evident in the West Europe (23.5%), which showed an increase from 6.9 million in 2000 to 8.5 million in 2010. Likewise, in the population aged 85 years and older, the West Europe (42.8%) also showed the fastest growth and increased from 806,000 in 2000 to 1.2 million in 2010. It is worth highlighting that Rhode Island was the only state that experienced a reduction in the number of people aged 65 years and older, and declined from 152,402 in 2000 to 151,881 in 2010. Conversely, all states exhibited an increase in the population of adults aged 85 years and older from 2000 to 2010.
