Track 01: Geriatrics

Geriatrics represents one of the most exciting in modern medicine. Geriatricians are physicians who focus on the care of the aging population. It expects to advance wellbeing by averting and treating ailments and inabilities in more seasoned grown-ups. This branch for the most part manages the care of elderly people matured above 60 years.

Track 02: Geriatrics and Gerontological Nursing

Gerontological Nursing is the specialty of nursing pertaining to older adults. Gerontological nurses work in collaboration with older adults, their families, and communities to support healthy aging, maximum functioning, and quality of life. Gerontological Nursing can also be defined as the study of the social, psychological, cognitive and biological aspects of aging. Gerontology is a multidisciplinary study that incorporates biology, psychology and sociology.

Track 03: Geriatrics and Geriatric Medicine

The principle point of Geriatric Medicine is to give the most elevated quality clinical care to enhance the soundness of more established grown-ups and society by making, deciphering, and dispersing learning through instruction and research. It is a specialty that focuses on health care of elderly people.

Track 04:  Geriatrics and Elderly Care

Elderly Care is showing special care to senior citizens regarding their daily needs. When their physical health begin to fail maintaining of the body becomes difficult. Seniors living in both home and senior living community, medical and non-medical home care should be provided. Longevity refers to duration of life or life expectancy. It is dependent on a person’s health condition and age. Exercise, diet and lifestyle are major factors that can affect longevity. Elderly care attends not just to the physical but also the psychosocial and spiritual concerns of patients and their families, and extends into the bereavement period. Elderly care is the term used to describe the support and medical care given during the time surrounding death.

Track 05: Geriatrics and Ageing Biology

Biology of ageing or bio-gerontology has as its primary objective understanding the basic processes that underlie ageing and age related disease. For some this means increasing human life span, for others it means increasing human health-span. Biological aging is the gradual deterioration of function characteristic of most complex life forms, arguably found in all biological kingdoms, that on the level of the organism increases mortality after maturation. The word senescence can refer either to cellular senescence or to senescence of the whole organism.

Track 06: Geriatrics and Biological Gerontology

Biological Gerontology  seeks to develop a biological understanding of the processes of aging, and is the field in which we will apply these findings to increase the length and vitality of our lives. Biological Gerontology is the scientific investigation into how and why we age on the molecular level, the organismic level, evolutionary level, and all those in between. This discipline seeks to understand why underfed animals live longer (as they do with caloric restriction), how free radicals might take years off our lives, where telomeres come into play with aging cells and aging people, and why having offspring later in life increases lifespan over many generations. Understanding the biological basis of aging is the first step towards slowing the aging process down, and maybe someday reversing the process.

Track 07: Geriatrics and End of Life Care

End-of-life care attends not just to the physical but also the psychosocial and spiritual concerns of patients and their families, and extends into the bereavement period. End-of-life care is the term used to describe the support and medical care given during the time surrounding death.

Track 08: Geriatrics and Geriatric Disorders

Age related diseases are commonly seen in older patients. These diseases include Osteoarthritis, Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases. About 60% of the older populations suffer from Obesity which leads to type 2 Diabetes and some suffer from metabolic syndrome which increases risk factor for developing cardiovascular diseases. And also in older people sleep related diseases are most common which further results in Old age Psychiatry.

Track 09: Geriatrics and Elder Abuse

Elderly abuse is one of the main problems for the aging population. Numerous elderly grown-ups are mishandled in their own homes, in relatives' homes, and even in offices in charge of their care. Abusers of older adults are both women and men, and may be family members, friends, or “trusted others.” In general, elder abuse is a term referring to any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult.

An older woman refers to women age 50 and older. Ageing women refers to the same chronological group but emphasizes that ageing is a process that occurs at very different rates among various individuals and groups. Privileged women may remain free of the health concerns that often accompany ageing until well into their 70s and 80s.

Why Edinburgh, Scotland?

In the United Kingdom (Scotland), most geriatricians are hospital physicians, where as some focus on community geriatrics. While originally a distinct clinical specialty, it has been integrated as a specialisation of general medicine since the late 1970s. Most geriatricians are, therefore, accredited for both. In contrast to the United States, geriatric medicine is a major specialty in the United Kingdom; geriatricians are the single most numerous internal medicine specialists. The most rapid growth in the population of adults aged 65 years and older was evident in the West Europe (23.5%), which showed an increase from 6.9 million in 2000 to 8.5 million in 2010. Likewise, in the population aged 85 years and older, the West Europe (42.8%) also showed the fastest growth and increased from 806,000 in 2000 to 1.2 million in 2010. It is worth highlighting that Rhode Island was the only state that experienced a reduction in the number of people aged 65 years and older, and declined from 152,402 in 2000 to 151,881 in 2010. Conversely, all states exhibited an increase in the population of adults aged 85 years and older from 2000 to 2010.

Percentage of older people in the UK:

Ageing of the UK population is projected to continue by 2035, it is projected that the median age will have risen to 42.2 years, an increase of 2.5 years in the quarter century after 2010. During the last century, there were peaks in the numbers of births after both world wars and a longer baby boom during the 1960s. Over the next 25 years people born just after World War II, now aged in their 60s, will continue into the oldest ages, reaching their late 80s by 2035. The 1960s ‘baby boomers’ currently in their mid-40s, will reach their early 60s around 2025 and by 2035 will be in their early 70s. As this birth cohort’s age they will contribute to the continuing ageing of the UK population. In terms of increases in the number and proportion of older people in the UK population, the percentage of persons aged 65 and over increased from 15 per cent in 1985 to 17 per cent in 2010, an increase of 1.7 million people. By 2035 it is projected that those aged 65 and over will account for 23 per cent of the total population.

Change in Scotland Population by Age:

The UK population is ageing and is projected to continue ageing over the next few decades with the fastest population increases in the numbers of those aged 85 and over. By 2035 England is projected to be the least aged of the four UK countries, with the lowest median age and the joint lowest proportion of persons aged 65 and over in its population. Scotland is projected to have the highest median age by that time but Wales is projected to have a slightly larger proportion of older people in its population than Scotland. The UK has gone from being one of the most aged countries in Europe in the mid-1980s to one of middle ranking among the EU-27 countries by 2010. It is projected to be one of the least aged countries in the EU-27 by 2035.
